Even though London can boast of a rapid development of education, very few people are interested in its history. Today, people simply know that there are the most popular universities in the city. However, the past of some of them reveals a number of important events. The history of the University of Greenwich also tells us a lot of interesting information. During the entire time of its existence, the university underwent many changes, related to external improvements and renaming, as well as global educational transformations and qualifications of its representatives. So, let’s learn more about this amazing world of science and its development at london1.one.
The beginning of a long history and further scientific activity
The history of the university began in 1891. It was founded in Woolwich and was originally called Woolwich Polytechnic. Overall, it is the second oldest polytechnic university in Great Britain. In 1970, the institution merged with part of Hammersmith College of Art and Building to form Thames Polytechnic. In 1993, it was renamed again to the University of Greenwich. Then several colleges joined the university in the following years.
Scientific activity and student life
In general, the research conducted by the university’s scientists seeks to have an impact on education, engineering, health care, as well as information and social policy. A large number of scientific works, projects and programmes are devoted to labour relations, natural resources, tourism and hospitality, landscape design and social networks. Among the most famous developments of the institution’s representatives is the leading evacuation model in the aviation industry, airEXODUS. The idea belongs to the fire safety engineering group, which is a world leader in the field of computational fire engineering. In addition, researchers working on 19 sustainable development and agriculture projects in India helped the university win the Times Higher Education Award 2010. Another achievement is the development of technologies that allow turning industrial waste and contaminated land into pebbles by two scientists from the university. Moreover, the University of Greenwich cooperates with many international organisations, government departments and global corporations. These include the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, one of the largest engine suppliers in the world GE Aerospace, the biotechnology corporation Pfizer, the multinational aerospace organisation Airbus and many others.

The University of Greenwich has several campuses. Greenwich Campus is located near Greenwich Park in London. It is mainly dedicated to history, politics and maritime management. It is also home to the Business School as well as the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Research laboratories, a TV studio and computer rooms are located on the territory of the institution too. A part of the campus is occupied by the library featuring a large collection of books and magazines. The university also includes the Avery Hill Campus and the Medway Campus. The first one houses the Faculty of Education & Health. The second campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Science. Greenwich Students’ Union also makes a big contribution to the development of this educational institution. The union plays an important role in organising various events, supporting the mental health of students and establishing cooperation with other educational institutions. Moreover, its representatives try to provide all the necessary information regarding participation in many scientific projects and programmes that take place not only in London but also in other parts of the world.
