It brought together scholars and enthusiasts dedicated to advancing and popularising genealogical research. In the early days, limited cataloguing of archival collections meant members spent a significant amount of time indexing records. Notably, over a 20-year period, members worked tirelessly on Percival Boyd’s Marriage Index, which eventually covered an eighth of all entries in parish registers prior to 1837.

The Society soon became home to the largest family history research library in the UK. Since its inception, it has curated unique collections of books, records, and digital resources. Its holdings include thousands of copies of registers, wills, censuses, electoral rolls, family histories, biographical dictionaries, and genealogical journals. These are available free of charge to members, while the general public can access them for a fee. Members also benefit from educational materials, specialist forums, and online courses, with the library further providing one-to-one consultations and guided tours.

With a firm focus on education, the Society began publishing its academic journal, The Genealogist, in 1925. The publication covers genealogical methodology, historical documents, and lineage analysis. Beyond publishing, the Society organises lectures and workshops designed to share expertise with both beginners and seasoned researchers in the field.

As the Society grew, it frequently outgrew its premises. This led to a move from Malet Place to 37 Harrington Gardens in 1954. By 1984, the sheer scale of the library’s collections necessitated another relocation to 14 Charterhouse Buildings. Originally built as a silk warehouse, the building was extensively refurbished to meet the community’s needs.

In 2000, the Society digitised a portion of its archives, launching them on the British Origins platform. These records were later made available through Findmypast. As one of the world’s largest genealogical databases, Findmypast hosts billions of searchable census entries, directories, and historical records. Furthermore, members enjoy free access to archives on the Society’s own website via the Frontis Archive Publishing System.

The Society sold its Charterhouse Buildings premises in 2020. It wasn’t until 2023 that it secured a new permanent home in Islington, situated near City Road.

Guarnieri Architects

Legacy and Recognition of the Society’s Work

For over a century, the Society of Genealogists has been at the forefront of researching, publishing, and digitising family history archives. Its online collection features over 11 million records, including Boyd’s Marriage Index, Boyd’s Inhabitants of London, and Boyd’s London Burials. The Society remains active in hosting lectures, seminars, and conferences to further professional development for both scholars and hobbyists. Through the Prince Michael of Kent Award, it has recognised outstanding contributions to genealogy by organisations such as the Family Records Centre, ABM Publishing Ltd, and the Genealogical Society of Utah.

Family Tree

The Society of Genealogists, an educational charity, serves as a vital resource for those exploring their family history and national heritage in the UK.
