He opened the first venue in Stevenage and the second in Wakefield. In 1997, the cinema also appeared in London, which became the group’s headquarters.

In 2004, the emergence of a new player in the screening industry sparked interest from the Blackstone investment company. Cineworld was eventually sold for £120m and continued under new management. The following year, the company expanded its operations by buying parts of the French film company UGC.

In 2012, the company acquired the Picturehouse Cinema chain, adding The Little Theatre, the Duke of York’s cinema, the Phoenix cinema and 18 other venues to its portfolio. Then Cineworld’s visitors were introduced to the premium Screening Rooms service. The new conditions featured large leather seats, a dining area and table service. The innovations of that period also included a ban on bringing drinks and hot food into the premises.

In 2014, employees of the Picturehouse subsidiary went on strike over low wages. In an effort to improve its reputation, the management opened Picturehouse Central as a new flagship location in the West End. In 2017, Cineworld announced its intention to merge with American chain Regal Cinemas. Having concluded a $3.6 billion deal, it gained access to the US market, creating the second-largest cinema group in the world.

In 2019, the company announced its intention to acquire Cineplex Entertainment, the largest cinema chain in Canada. However, Cineworld claimed that the other party to the deal had breached the contract, making it impossible to complete. As a result, Cineplex Entertainment sued Cineworld for the cancelled purchase, demanding $1.23 billion. After Cineworld’s share price fell by almost 30% overnight, it claimed it would appeal the decision.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the group was forced to close on 17 March 2020. Subsequently, the company announced that it would reopen in the UK in July and in Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Jersey in August. However, its new chairman Alicja Kornasiewicz had to close most of its venues again from autumn to spring of the following year. Although Cineworld had returned to normal operations, it found itself on the verge of bankruptcy due to the previous global crisis. After regaining financial stability in 2024, it announced the restructuring of its six venues to return to profitability.

Cineworld Cinemas

Recognition and significance of Cineworld’s activities for the UK film industry

Cineworld is considered a leading global cinema group, operating in the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and other countries.
