Due to the growing demand and popularity of inpatient facilities, the hospital changed its location in 1844. It was moved to the premises of the former barracks of the Light Horse Volunteers. There, the hospital formed departments and started to help patients with various diseases and medical problems.

Mysterious infection

In 1955, the Royal Free Hospital experienced an outbreak of an infectious disease. The prominent symptoms were fever followed by persistent fatigue. More than 250 employees of the institution caught the infection. Therefore, the hospital had to be closed for a long period.

Later, the institution carried out a thorough investigation to determine the disease the doctors contracted. As it turned out, it was myalgic encephalomyelitis. In other words, this is chronic fatigue syndrome.

Women’s education

For a long time, the Royal Free was the only hospital in London that allowed women to study medicine.
